A colleague at work (TRING/AYLESBURY) is looking to sell the following car,
and would like an idea of its sale price (or even offers!) : -

300TE Mercedes Estate 4-Matic four wheel drive.
6 cylinder 3 litre petrol
1989/90 G reg,
107,000 miles
Leather
Inside good
Goes like a train
Petrol but surprisingly economical
Seven seats
Metallic mid blue
The small sills

NEGATIVES -
no aircon
rusty front sills
aerial and rear windscreen wiper do not work
speaker on one rear door and inside handle on the other need fixing (both
doors do work !)
badges nicked
not much history

Paid £2k for it three years ago and spent about £1k or so doing it up.

If the rear speaker and door trim was fixed , badges put back and it was
buffed up it would look very good.

On a G reg!

Bit much i think to pay for one of that vintage, but in todays market
if it had a full years MOT i would guess at £500 tops.

Less if it has no MOT, a lot less.

Yes, its the age, thats the killer and without a major MB
service history people will be put off.

When they go wrong, boy they go wrong, and its expensive.

Sorry but there are heaps of cars for sale out there at the
moment all selling cheap.

It'a a W124, which was probably the best made Mercedes of recent years. It's
a 300TE, so a W124 with the best engine.

TBH it's virtually worthless because it's a 4-matic. People who know Mercs
avoid 4-matics because if anything goes wrong with them it tends to cost
around £1500.

If it was mine, I'd throw it on ebay with a £500 reserve, although last time
I threw a W124 Merc on all I had was a succession of phone calls 2 mins
before the end of the auction from Asian sounding blokes all trying to
haggle.

Its got 2 months MoT but he says it will have a new MoT before its sold. The
condition of the interior - wear on leather etc is consistent with the
mileage shown on the odometer.

If it weren't for the colour, I'd want it because I like W124s, don't
care about fuel economy (I drive an RX8), and like AWD - even though I
know 4Matic is asking for trouble.

But I still think it's worthless for the reasons detailed before, and
being metallic mid blue it's a colour that a: doesn't suit the car, and
b: is always trouble for me ;)

7 seat kits are dirt cheap on eBay.
4Matics are a troublesome heap o' shit when they get old.
300Es are thirsty and no-one wants thirsty cars.
