Hi,

I feel I must let you all know about the nightmare I have just had dealing
with Budget Insurance.

Appologies in advance if any of you feel this is O.T.

I insured my Frontera back in the end of March 03, right from the go I knew
things were not going to be easy. Every piece of documentation such as
whereabouts of NCD's, previous insurers etc all had to be sent 2 or 3 times
as, a week or two after sending out the first copies I would receive a
reminder, telling me that I HAD NOT sent these docs, and doing so would
invalid my insurance etc. In the end I would phone through such
details...no mean task for me as I suffer from a pretty bad stammer!

This settled down after the initial complicated month, until I had an LPG
conversion carried out. I duly notified BUDGET (as is my duty) and
explained that, as I would have to send a copy of the conversion
certificate, I was worried about it getting lost in whatever black hole
existed in their internal post system. The Lady assured me that she would
personally take care of it, and indeed she rang me back on several occasions
to assure me that things were OK, the conversion had been included in my
cover and at no extra cost. Everything was Tickity-Boo........until this
week.

I received a curt letter, informing me that I had not returned my insurance
certificate (?) and that withholding it was a criminal offence (??)

I duly rang Budget, who informed me that my insurance is cancelled, and has
been for the last 2 months (???) I received no indication of this, despite
them insisting that they sent me warning letters. Nor indeed have I
received a refund of 8(ish) months premium. In fact Budget have put me in
the position where I may have been driving illegally through no fault of my
own. Very nice when you consider that I regularly tow the club boat around
West Wales...could have been very embarrassing, not to mention expensive.

The upshot is, Budget are refusing to accept that they have received my LPG
certificate, despite my instance that someone in their organisation (the
only person, incidentally, who gave me helpful and professional
service...surely she must have moved on by now?) actually confirmed that she
had received the document from me on the telephone. Of course I could not
quote her name today as I am not in the habit of keeping names for months on
end, I leave that to the stalkers. Which leaves me where?

No insurance, out of pocket after whatever fees they deem fit to remove from
my refund and pretty pissed of that they did not have the decency to
apologise for what is obviously an error on their behalf...I mean, honestly,
why would I not bother sending them a Certificate for a conversion that I
spent over a grand for, and after notifying them about the work in the first
place? Makes no sense.

I shall send every Manager of each department in Budget Insurance a similar
letter of complaint, hopefully it will generate some discussion and help
resolve whatever breakdown in comunication they are having.

Until this happens I urge you to take my advice...STEER CLEAR OF BUDGET
INSURANCE!

get onto the insurance ombudsman
dont bother sending every manager a letter, one to the managing director
only, CC your solicitor and the ombudsman and watchdog or similar.
Demand full explanation of whats going on, point out that you have not
received any letters OR the refund. You want a full explanation AND the
matter resolved within 3 days of them receiving the letter.
I can wholeheartedly recommend this, though initially only use the solicitor
as a bona fide recipient. You shouldn't need to actively engage a solicitor
at this stage.

The Insurance Ombudsman's contact details should be in the bumf sent to you
by Budget. I have direct experience of this action, it takes some time but
gets results. However, only if the company you're complaining about is
interested in *staying* in business. If they're on their hunkers you've got
little chance of a refund.

Best of luck!

Yes Neil

Buget are crap, in fact I had the same problems with Firebond and
Performance Choice, Firebond would not release my NCD proof and it took me a
year to get this off them.

I had the exact same troubles as you apart from the LPG conversion, even
when I faxed the copies in they still sent me letters saying that they had
not received documents from me. In the end I cancelled them and so decided
to Try Norwich Union Direct and boy did they quote me happy........

I saved over £1,300 with them and that put a smile on my face, and I have
never had any problems with them....

You only find out how good these insurance co's. are when
you have a clame or something goes wrong.

My partner was with Colonnade for a year, when she took out the
insurance they gave her 50% NCD to start (previously on someone
else's insurance), when she wanted to renew it this year they told her
that they had been bought out by Swinton and that they would give her
the year that she had just been with them, and they would not honour
the 50%.

She phoned Vauxhall and they `mirrored' My NCD as she is named on my
insurance the difference was £300. They obviously wanted her custom.

I don't feel it's OT, I do feel it's misplaced shite from someone who's
just bitter. You took the word of an insurance company by phone, pretty
much everyone knows that is just stupid and asking to get fk'ed over.
You're not the first to have been done so, and you certainly won't be
the last.

Seeing as I'm only in my twenties, less than one actually... :)

Coasting towards traffic lights at sub 20mph in traffic, and a stupid
old fart in a Nissan Sunny decided to just suddenly change lanes.
Unfortunately I happened to be at the side of them :(

I wrote the, arguably, misplaced and OT shite (how can it be misplaced but
not OT?) immeadiately after finding out about the situation, I therefore did
not really have time to get bitter.........I was/am annoyed however that I
have been put in a position where I could have faced serious legal
consiquenses & finacial hardship for a number of years, through no fault of
my own.

I am aware, however , that this is not the most serious thing that can
happen in life....and, my subsequent therapy is starting to become effecive
:) Bitterness is a waste of energy, better to do something more
constuctive...like resolve the issue.

I agree with the last part whole heartedly, and I do pride myself in being
quite a cynical old fucker (it's quite fashionable these days), but I really
must take my hat off to you Lordy! When the representative of a company,
with whom I have taken out a serious and compulsory legal contract with,
makes a statement, then I feel that I should be able to trust (to a certain
degree) in the advice given, otherwise the whole point of dealing with
people by phone becomes pointless, and therefore all correspondence should
be done via mail.

For instance, I took out fresh insurance with Direct Line, the lady who
took my details advised me that I had immediate cover, and that my
certificate would be forwarded to me.....

****Dilemma****

should I jump in my vehicle and have a nice drive (all be it to work)?...or
avoid my vehicle like the plague?...scared to death that things have bound
to have gone wrong.....better wait until I have the certificate in my hand
in a day or two.........

.....then again, what good is the certificate if the policy has been
cancelled without me knowing? Even the bits of paper can't be trusted!!!!
Better not go out eh? stay in where it is safe........

This is not just any old 'serious' and 'legal company' we are talking
about, it's an Insurance Company. Their sole purpose of existing is to
fuck you over wherever possible. Most people are aware of this and act
accordingly. Does your failure to do so make you negligent... probably
not, but it certainly didn't help. Any material changes to your policy
should have been followed by a request for a new Certificate detailing
those changes.

I said it before, but I'll say it again. *nothing* an insurance company
tells you by telephone with regards to policy changes should be accepted
as fact until you have documented proof.

Different situation. Your problem regarded material changes to a policy.
Did you even try contacting the Insurance Ombudsman (or whatever it's
called now) with regards to their cancellation ?

Yup...and a few other organisations given on the back of the policy in case
of a complaint......but then again maybe they were false addresses? (now the
paranoia is really setting in :) )

I also sent copies to various departmental managers/directors within the
company. To be honest, I don't expect much in the way of results, and to be
honest I don't really want much...apart from money owed, my proof of NCD and
maybe an apology, yes...that would be nice! Just to say sorry, it was our
bad...

Don't suppose there is much point in asking you for a lend of a

It is true that I posted the information/warning/rant/whinge on about eight
newsgroups, all of which I frequent or at the very least lurk.

For instance, uk.rec.scuba is one of the newsgroups that I regularly
frequent, and have in the past contributed to. Now, insurance on a 4x4 has
tenuous links to scuba diving to say the least - but it is true to say that
I bought my 4x4 primarily to help out towing and launching the club boat...I
suspect/assume that a number of people who enjoy this hobby have similar
vehicles, and I wanted to share this particular piece of misfortune with
those that have offered me advice in the past.

I know however, that it has entered the realms of being Off Topic for many
people and I respect the fact that this can irritate. I therefore posted a
forewarning & pre-emptive apology on the top of the post.

I hope this explains things.

Thanks to everyone who has offered me constructive comments and advice on
this matter.

Cheers
Neil Jones (Amanda on the weekends.)

never too good is it!
Could have been a lot worse. A friend of mine, quite a few years ago had
very bad luck. He was pulled over one night at the begaining of the week
for
having a dodgy tail light, the police let him go and gave him a producer.
He
thought nothing else of it, and planned to go into the police station at
the
weekend. Then on the wednesday he got pulled again for routine, and got
given yet another producer, again he thought nothing of it, and planned to
take this producer in with the other at the weekend. When he got his
insurance documents out, he found he had only a cover note which had ran
out
the week before, so he contacted his insurance company (can't remember who
they were), and they said they had cancelled his insurance policy two
weeks
before, and he should have received a letter (WHICH HE DIDN'T). So to cut
a
long story short, he ended up going to court charged with TWO offences of
driving with no insurance (since he had been given two producers). He was
given the standard 6 points for no insurance twice totalling 12 points ,
and
a large double fine. The only bit of luck he had is the court made an
exception to the automatic 12 point ban, due to the circumstances, and he
needed to drive for his job.

explained that, as I would have to send a copy of the conversion
certificate, I was worried about it getting lost in whatever black hole
existed in their internal post system. The Lady assured me that she would
personally take care of it, and indeed she rang me back on several
occasions

to assure me that things were OK, the conversion had been included in my
cover and at no extra cost. Everything was Tickity-Boo........until this
week.
I received a curt letter, informing me that I had not returned my

I duly rang Budget, who informed me that my insurance is cancelled, and
has

been for the last 2 months (???) I received no indication of this,
despite

them insisting that they sent me warning letters. Nor indeed have I
received a refund of 8(ish) months premium. In fact Budget have put me in
the position where I may have been driving illegally through no fault of

The upshot is, Budget are refusing to accept that they have received my

only person, incidentally, who gave me helpful and professional
service...surely she must have moved on by now?) actually confirmed that

honestly,

I shall send every Manager of each department in Budget Insurance a

resolve whatever breakdown in comunication they are having.
Until this happens I urge you to take my advice...STEER CLEAR OF BUDGET

never too good is it!
What? Posting upside down and not trimming a single word of the previous

You'll have to learn to ignore Andy Luckman. He's one of these people who
has few friends (no prizes for guessing why) and his only fun life comes
from quoting the newsgroup FAQ written by his fellow social outcasts.
Just humor him.
Most of his posts seem to very similar. I know I don't follow the true
rules, and I thank him for his input. I feel though that true content is
more important than just going around newsgroups pretending to be some
cleaver sarcastic moderator. I'm sure I'll get replies about this, but I
won't bring myself down to his level with an argument (which I think this
may be why he does this), so I won't be responding to anymore whit in this
thread. My true interest is LPG & cars, and apologise to other true users
for going OT.

Could have been a lot worse. A friend of mine, quite a few years ago had
very bad luck. He was pulled over one night at the begaining of the week for
having a dodgy tail light, the police let him go and gave him a producer. He
thought nothing else of it, and planned to go into the police station at the
weekend. Then on the wednesday he got pulled again for routine, and got
given yet another producer, again he thought nothing of it, and planned to
take this producer in with the other at the weekend. When he got his
insurance documents out, he found he had only a cover note which had ran out
the week before, so he contacted his insurance company (can't remember who
they were), and they said they had cancelled his insurance policy two weeks
before, and he should have received a letter (WHICH HE DIDN'T). So to cut a
long story short, he ended up going to court charged with TWO offences of
driving with no insurance (since he had been given two producers). He was
given the standard 6 points for no insurance twice totalling 12 points , and
a large double fine. The only bit of luck he had is the court made an
exception to the automatic 12 point ban, due to the circumstances, and he
needed to drive for his job.

When I was younger I had a company claim they had dropped me months
before when I tried to make a claim but I was lucky, the judge looked at
the fact that these greedy bastards had taken my monthly payment out
every month up until the accident so they had to pay the claim. Then
after that they really did drop me but of course tried to take payments
out of my account for a year after that, I had the foresight to put a
stop payment on any charges from that company so I didn't lose anything.
I also had a similar experience as your friend, got pulled over, took
out my card only to realize it had expired 6 months before and I hadn't
received a new one, cop gave me what I guess you call a "producer" and I
went down to my broker to find out what the deal was and he said they
had been bought out and my policy hadn't been renewed but he would hand
write me a card on the spot. Of course for those 6 months that I was
apparently not insured but still paying to be they would not refund it.
Thankfully nothing happened to me or my truck in that time. I of course
found another company that week.

Your lucky you want to try getting service from Budget after an
accident! I am disabled and when my car was wrecked by a van I rang
them, I had paid extra for their specialist cover and was supposed to
get a suitable replacement vehicle 24/7. First after taking all the
details they then told me to ring the insureance company Hastings
(that was the first I knew that Budget were not actually an insureance
company) I had to give them all the details again, they then told me
to ring their repairer who could not collect my car for another 3
days! I then had to myself ring Drive Assisst Budget's extra provider
they said they could bring me a car but not take away my damaged one
which would have been stripped of worse in 3 days standing in
Birmingham. And I had to make up my mind what to do by 3 pm as that
was the cut off point for that day (some 24/7) The whole episode took
months to sort and Budget wiped their hands of the whole thing and
refused point blank to apologise. They are the biggest load of
bastards on the planet. The lesson is DO NOT BUY CAR INSURANCE FOR
ANY BROKER THAT DOES NOT HAVE THE WORD BROKER IN THEIR TITLE.
Because they are not bound by the IBA code of conduct and not duty
bound to find you the best deal.

Hi,
I feel I must let you all know about the nightmare I have just had dealing
with Budget Insurance.
I duly notified BUDGET (as is my duty) and

budget - in a word - are a bunch of money grabbing fucking arseholes. They'll only entertain your call if you've got some money to
give them. Beyond that they're cunts and they just don't give a fuck about you. The staff are trained to divert any and every call
possible to either their renewals dept (money) or to some other fuckhead who will try and get money out of you for some reason.
Budget Insurance are the epitomy of cold ruthless arrogant greed.

Budget Insurance are the epitomy of cold ruthless arrogant greed.
Nothing to do with your greed then, that you will not pay for good service?
Cheap and good value for money seldom appear in the same transaction.

On the contrary it was just as cheap if not cheaper when I changed to
P M Hart Brokers in Birmingham and the service has been first class.

Nice cross post.

fwiw, I joined 'Budget' because they were surprisingly cheap for a
performance car. I subsequently left because I found them to be
completely incompetent, complete with a call centre full of fuckwits
which appears to be somewhere in the back end of Africa.
